IELTS has officially introduced a Writing on Paper option for computer-delivered tests across Australia. As an IDP IELTS Approved Preparation Partner, we are sharing all the essential details about what this change means for your test day, how the format works, and how to decide if it is the right fit for your preparation strategy.
How the Hybrid Format Works
The Writing on Paper option combines the fast turnaround times of computer-delivered testing with the traditional feel of handwriting your essays. All other sections remain computer based so students can still expect for the speedy results.
Why IELTS Introduced Writing on Paper
IDP introduced this option directly in response to candidate feedback. While computer-delivered testing offers speed and convenience, performance depends heavily on how comfortable and confident you feel in the test environment.
This hybrid option may be ideal if you:
-
Think more clearly when mapping out ideas with pen and paper.
-
Feel distracted by typing in a quiet room full of keyboards.
-
Write faster by hand than you can type accurately under timed conditions.
-
Want to keep the focus entirely on language ability rather than computer typing mechanics.
What Stays the Same?
Choosing the Writing on Paper format does not change the test standards or difficulty:
-
Same Skills Assessed: Your vocabulary, grammar, coherence, and task achievement are measured against the exact same criteria.
-
Same Test Duration: The Writing section remains 60 minutes long with the same task types (Task 1 and Task 2).
-
Comparable Results: Rigorous research confirms that scores are fully equivalent across both digital and handwritten response formats.
-
Score Validity: Test results remain valid for two years from the test date.
Crucial Rules and Considerations Before Booking
Before booking your test date, keep these key conditions in mind:
-
IELTS One Skill Retake Rules: One Skill Retake is available for this format, only if your initial test attempt was also completed using the Writing on Paper option.
-
Exclusion for UKVI: The Writing on Paper option is not available for IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) test takers.
-
Check Visa and Institution Requirements: Always verify with your university, professional registration body, or visa authority that they accept this delivery format before booking.
-
Accessibility Support: Access arrangements, including large print and Braille formats, continue to be supported across test centres.
