How is the GRE Score Calculated?

GRE Score

At E2 TestPrep, we know that understanding how the GRE is scored can feel a bit overwhelming. But don’t worry—we’re here to break it down for you in simple, clear terms so you can confidently tackle the test.

Let’s dive into everything you need to know about GRE scoring, including the different sections, how scores are calculated, and what it all means for your total GRE score.

The Basics of GRE Scoring

The GRE General Test is scored across three sections:

1. Verbal Reasoning

  • Score Range: 130 – 170 (in 1-point increments)
  • Tests your ability to analyze and evaluate written material.

2. Quantitative Reasoning

  • Score Range: 130 – 170 (in 1-point increments)
  • Measures your problem-solving skills using basic math concepts.

3. Analytical Writing

  • Score Range: 0 – 6 (in 0.5-point increments)
  • Assesses your ability to articulate ideas clearly and effectively through essays.

Your total GRE score is the sum of your Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores, ranging from 260 to 340. The Analytical Writing score is reported separately and does not affect your overall GRE score.

How Each Section is Scored

Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning

Here’s how the scoring works:

  • Each section has two parts, with 27 questions in total.
  • The test is section-adaptive, meaning how well you do in the first part determines the difficulty level of the second part.
  • Your raw score (number of correct answers) is converted to a scaled score using a process called equating. This ensures fairness by accounting for slight differences in difficulty between test versions.

Analytical Writing

  • This section is scored holistically on a scale of 0–6, focusing on the overall quality of your essays rather than deducting points for specific errors.
  • Essays are reviewed by both a human grader and ETS’ e-rater®, a computer program designed to evaluate writing proficiency.
  • If the two scores differ significantly, a third human grader steps in.

What is a GRE Percentile Rank?

Your GRE score doesn’t just stop at the numbers. You’ll also receive a percentile rank that shows how you compare to other test-takers. For instance, if you’re in the 75th percentile, you performed better than 75% of people who took the test in the last three years. Percentile ranks are a key way for graduate schools to gauge your performance relative to others.

How to Calculate Your Total GRE Score

To calculate your total GRE score, simply add your Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores. For example:

  • Verbal Reasoning: 145
  • Quantitative Reasoning: 150
  • Total GRE Score: 295

The Analytical Writing score is reported separately and does not contribute to this total.

How Long are GRE Scores Valid?

Your GRE scores are valid for five years. This gives you plenty of time to apply to programs. To check your scores, log into your ETS account.

FAQs About the GRE

The total GRE score ranges from 260 to 340, combining Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning scores. Analytical Writing is scored separately on a scale of 0 to 6.

What’s the difference between raw and scaled scores?

Your raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly, while the scaled score adjusts for question difficulty and test version differences.

Can I see my scores right after the test?

Yes! You’ll see unofficial scores for Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning immediately. However, official scores, including Analytical Writing, are released 8–10 days after you sit your test.

What percentile is a good GRE score?

This depends on your program. Generally, a score in the 75th percentile or above is competitive for most graduate schools.
