For many candidates, scoring the required grade in the IELTS exam is a monumental challenge, as it will open up numerous opportunities for them to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. Nevertheless, what if you have a situation where everything is okay, except for one requirement? For example, a low writing band score or a speaking performance that was not very impressive. One poor performance could spoil your dreams entirely. That’s where the IELTS One Skill Retake comes in.

IELTS One Skill Retake in 2025: What is it?

The IELTS One Skill Retake is a relatively new feature that allows test-takers to participate in it at any time, taking just one of the four IELTS test sections —Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking —without having to retake the entire test.

This update represents a significant change from the typical system, where you would have had to redo all components if you wanted to enhance your score by one to four points. But if it is only the one area that you performed poorly in, you can do that skill again.

The new program shows that people are more open and pragmatic about language proficiency, and it is already having the desired effect. Remember that when you prepare for IELTS General or Academic with E2, you are preparing with an official Approved Preparation Provider.

IELTS One Skill Retake in 2025: The Four IELTS Skills

Let’s quickly recap the four parts of the IELTS test:

  • Listening: Tests your ability to understand spoken English in various contexts.
  • Reading: Tests your reading comprehension skills through texts of increasing complexity.
  • Writing: Measures your ability to communicate effectively in written English.
  • Speaking: A face-to-face or recorded video interview with an examiner assessing your spoken fluency, coherence, vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation.

In the past, even if you scored 8s and 9s in three sections, a 6.0 in one skill could mean a complete test retake. Not anymore.

Who can use IELTS One Skill Retake in 2025?

Most IELTS Test Takers are allowed to retake only a single skill in the IELTS One Skill Retake program if they meet these specific criteria:

1. One Skill Retake in 2025 is computer-delivered only

The One Skill Retake is a computer-delivered test service available to anyone who has previously taken the computer-delivered test. This is not valid for those who have taken the paper-based test.

2. One Skill Retake in 2025 is only valid for a Recent IELTS Test

The period since your IELTS test was taken should not exceed 60 days, and this is also the latest condition if you wish to be considered for a One Skill Retake. In case your scores were accomplished beyond this period, you will lose your eligibility for the one skill retake in 2025.

3. One Skill Retake in 2025 can only be taken at Participating Centres

Most, but not all, IELTS centres have included this feature, and you may only use One Skill Retake by a specific centre. Ensure that your centre is One Skill enabled before contacting them. The number of One-Skill-Retake test locations is gradually increasing as the service is becoming more popular, so do not forget to check it on the IELTS website.

4. One Skill Retake in 2025 remains Single Component Only

It is essential to note that the rule permits only one of the four skills to be retaken. If, for degrees of performance in the four areas, (e.g. Writing and Speaking) that make two the reasons for poor performance, the person who decides to take the test has to choose the area where they can improve their position the most.

One Skill Retake in 2025: Why was it introduced?

The One Skill Retake update was initiated in response to the complaints of thousands of candidates who considered it a disadvantage to retake the entire test solely because of one lower score. The One Skill Retake feature changes the IELTS exam into a real-life language proficiency assessment, not just a test of your knowledge, and makes the exam even fairer, more flexible, and more efficient.

For example:

  • University students who need to get at least 6.5 or 7.0 on the Writing part (usually) no longer have to re-take the whole test if they have just missed it by half a band.
  • People who have to wait for their visa because of only one point in one band of scores are now able to act on that single point and have their applications processed faster.
  • The application of professionals who are planning to get skilled migration or registration (for example, nurses or engineers) can be the focal point of one area, instead of repeating the whole test.

One Skill Retake in 2025: How it Works

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how the One Skill Retake process works:

One Skill Retake in 2025 Step 1: Wait for Your Test Results

When you have the results of your IELTS test, do a thorough check to see how satisfied you feel about them. If you think that 3 out of 4 components are great, but you are not happy about the last o,ne and you did the test on a computer, then it is likely that you can take just one skill.

One Skill Retake in 2025 Step 2: Log in to Your IELTS Portal

Log in to the test-taker portal with your login credentials. On there, you will find an option to register for a one-skill retake if you are still within 60 days and meet all the requirements.

One Skill Retake in 2025 Step 3: Select the Skill to Retake

Highlight the skill in which you have the lowest score. Think about which one is important for your immigration, academic, or professional goals, and not only the score.

One Skill Retake in 2025 Step 4: Book a Date

Pick a date of re-sitting in a test centre where re-taking the test is allowed. This might be the same place where you initially did the test, or another that provides this possibility.

One Skill Retake in 2025 Step 5: Receive Your New Score

You will receive a new test report form (TRF) after you have given your test again. It will display your results of the retaken skill and the original scores for the other three. In case that the new score is less than the original one, you have the opportunity to select which TRF to present.

Cost of IELTS One Skill Retake in 2025

The cost of a One Skill Retake is lower than a complete test, but still worthwhile. The actual fee depends on where you take it and the test centre, but figure on around 50–70% of the cost of the full test.

You can find out from your test centre or on the official IELTS website for the most current and correct pricing in your area.

Institutions Accepting One Skill Retake in 2025

Numerous universities, immigration authorities, and professional associations now accept the IELTS One Skill Retake scores.

Some of the notable ones include:

  • Department of Home Affairs (Australia): One Skill Retake scores are accepted for visa applications.
  • Universities across Australia, UK, and Canada: More institutions are starting to accept these scores for admissions.
  • Professional Bodies: Associations like Engineers Australia and Chartered Accountants ANZ accept the retake scores for certification and licensing.

Important: Always check with the institution or authority you are applying to before booking your One Skill Retake. Some still require a full set of scores from one sitting.

Benefits of IELTS One Skill Retake in 2025

There are several obvious advantages to this change, including:

Save Time

Preparation for all four skills once more is time-consuming. Now you can concentrate your effort and revision on one.

Save Money

While not without cost, a retake is much cheaper than retaking the whole test.

Fairer Scoring

This method acknowledges that perhaps you just had a bad day in one section. Everybody has weaknesses and strengths, and this takes that into consideration.

Improved Outcomes

Even a small improvement (e.g., from 6.0 to 6.5 in Writing) can make all the difference between a visa approval or refusal, or an offer from the university of your choice.

Preparation Tips for a Successful Retake

Whether you are retaking Writing, Listening, Reading, or Speaking, these tips can help:

1. Review Your Previous Performance

What exactly went wrong? Was it timing, vocabulary, structure, pronunciation, or misunderstanding task instructions? Be honest with yourself and look for specific areas where you need improvement.

2. Use Official IELTS Materials

Stick to materials from the IELTS official site or well-known IELTS study books and practice tests. Free or low-cost practice material may be of poor quality.

3. Get Professional Feedback

If you are retaking Writing or Speaking, consider having your work reviewed by an IELTS coach or language tutor. Constructive feedback can make a huge difference to your score.

4. Practise Under Exam Conditions

Time management is important. Simulate exam environments to get used to the pressure and time limits.

5. Manage Stress and Mindset

A Single Skill Retake may be less daunting than a whole test, but it still calls for mental readiness. Remain calm, assured, and determined towards your objective.

One Skill Retake in 2025 Common Questions (FAQs)

Can I retake the same skill more than once?

Currently, you can only take one “One Skill Retake” per original test session. If you’re not satisfied with the second result, you would need to sit a new full IELTS test.

What happens if my new score is lower?

No stress. You’ll receive a new TRF with your updated score, but you can choose whether to use your original or new TRF when applying.

Does the format of the retaken test change?

No. The test format remains exactly the same. For instance, if you’re retaking the Speaking section, it will still involve an interview with an examiner, just like in your original test.

Is this option available worldwide?

As of 2025, the feature is being rolled out gradually. It’s not yet available in all countries or centres, the best we can recommend is to check with your local IELTS test centre for availability.
