A major update from the official IELTS partners confirms a shift toward fully computer-delivered testing. From mid-2026, IELTS will no longer be offered as a paper-based test, all exams will be carried out digitally. Implementation timelines may vary by location. This transition follows extensive research showing that test-takers increasingly prefer digital formats for their speed and convenience.
The shift to computer delivered testing assures much faster results for all candidates. Most digital results are now available within one to five days of the exam. This faster turnaround can be particularly helpful for candidates working with tight deadlines. It also allows for more frequent test dates, providing greater flexibility for busy schedules and a quicker implementation of one skill retakes (OSR) when required.

The future of IELTS: Introducing the “Writing on Paper” hybrid option
While the move to digital is the primary focus, IELTS remains committed to accessibility. A new “Writing on Paper” option is being introduced in selected international markets. You will be allowed to do your Writing component, short text and essay, on paper. Please note that you will still be required to complete the Reading an Listening components on a computer.
This hybrid option allows candidates who prefer writing by hand to feel more comfortable during the test. At the same time, it maintains the same structure and assessment standards as other IELTS formats. Scores from this version are equal in value to any other IELTS test.
The future of IELTS: A continued focus on accesibility
The test also continues their focus towards accessibility with IELTS making arrangements for candidates with special needs such as braille, lip reading and large print. One Skill Retake is also available for special needs candidates in locations where OSR is active.
In locations where it is available, One Skill Retake allows candidates to retake a single section instead of the full test. If you underperform in just one area, you can retake that specific sub-test. This saves significant time and money by avoiding a full exam re attempt. It allows you to focus your energy on improving a single specific skill.
All current paper-based results stay valid until the end of their two-year period.

The future of IELTS: Bridging the gap with the E2 and IDP Mock Test
