If you’re planning to pursue graduate studies, chances are you’ve heard of the GRE (Graduate Record Examination). It’s a crucial step in your academic journey, opening doors to numerous opportunities. But what exactly is the GRE, and how can you best prepare for it? Let’s dive into everything you need to know about the GRE to help you succeed.
What is the GRE?
The GRE is a standardized test that is an admissions requirement for many graduate schools in the United States and worldwide. Administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), which also administers the TOEFL, it measures your analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills. It’s designed to assess your readiness for postgraduate-level studies.
If you are pursuing a postgraduate certification like an MBA, understanding the importance of the GRE for your application will be essential. Read our MBA article to learn more.

Structure of the GRE
The GRE consists of three measures:
- Analytical Writing: This measure tests your critical thinking and analytical writing skills. It requires you to articulate and support complex ideas clearly and effectively. You will complete one ‘Analyze an Issue’ task which is 30 minutes long.
- Verbal Reasoning: This measure evaluates your ability to analyze and evaluate written material, synthesize information from it, analyze relationships among component parts of sentences, and recognize relationships between words and concepts. It consists of two sections – Section 1 has 12 questions and lasts 18 minutes; Section 2 has 15 questions and lasts 23 minutes.
- Quantitative Reasoning: This measure tests your problem-solving ability using basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Like the Verbal section, it also has two sections – Section 1 has 12 questions and lasts 21 minutes; Section 2 has 15 questions and lasts 26 minutes.
GRE Scoring
The GRE is scored as follows:
- Analytical Writing: 0 to 6, in half-point increments.
- Verbal Reasoning: 130 to 170, in 1-point increments.
- Quantitative Reasoning: 130 to 170, in 1-point increments.
Your GRE score is valid for five years, allowing you flexibility in planning your graduate studies.
Importance of the GRE
Many graduate programs consider GRE scores a key component of the admissions process. A strong GRE score can enhance your application and showcase your readiness for rigorous academic work.
Some scholarships and fellowships also use GRE scores as part of their selection criteria, meaning a competitive GRE score can help secure your place in your desired program and potentially secure the necessary funding to complete your studies.
