Most Common CELPIP Mistake #1: Not Understanding the Test Format

Before you start studying for the test, spend some time reading the test format thoroughly. Most Common CELPIP Mistake #3: Memorizing and Repeating Answers in the Speaking Test

It can be tempting to learn by heart perfect model answers for the Speaking section, especially for tasks such as “Describe a scene” or “Offer advice.” However, examiners are experienced in identifying scripted answers. They would like to listen to your spontaneous language abilities, not prepared speeches.

Rather than memorizing, work on practicing how to structure your thinking and answer naturally. Be clear and firm in your speech. Support what you are saying with real or plausible examples. You do not have to be a professional speaker. You simply must be clear and relevant.

For example, if asked to write about a photograph, do not use aimless or overly refined sentences. State what you observe and provide some context. A statement such as “There’s a group of people having a picnic in the park, basking in the sunlight” is preferable to “The weather is suitable for outdoor activity.”

Most Common CELPIP Mistake #4: Not Developing Your Ideas Fully

Short or undeveloped responses are a common cause of missing marks in both the Writing and Speaking sections. Having an opinion or even answering the question is not sufficient. You must go into some detail about your ideas.

One useful strategy is to use a straightforward formula: state your point, clarify it, and provide an example. This indicates to the examiner that not only can you say what you mean, but that you can explain it logically too.

For instance, rather than saying, “Public transportation is better,” you can say, “Public transportation is better because it minimizes traffic and pollution. For cities such as Toronto, subways and buses enable thousands of citizens to stay off cars each day, making the commute quicker and cleaner.”

This shows a range of vocabulary and an evident line of reasoning.

Most Common CELPIP Mistake #5: Not Reviewing Your Work

Time pressure may make many applicants complete a task and go ahead. Not taking that split second to review can cost you precious points. Minor spelling mistakes, clumsy phrasing, or even leaving out part of the question can all reduce your score.

Develop the habit of leaving some time at the conclusion of every question to return and review your responses. In the Writing section, review for spelling, grammar, and sentence clarity. In the Speaking section, use any remaining preparation time to organize your thoughts, and any remaining response time to conclude your point.
